Geological and geotechnical consultations

Geological and geotechnical consultations

Geological or geotechnical consulting guarantees the optimal progress of any construction project, regardless of its size. It allows to obtain technical solutions that are optimal in terms of cost and schedule, but also to prevent risks that could even lead to a construction disaster. Geotechnical consultations also help to solve problems that have already arisen. The consulting service increases the efficiency of works related to the investment, optimizes the execution of the construction project, and at the same time contributes to increased safety during the investment implementation.

Scope of geotechnical consultations

Consulting covers all aspects of geotechnics and engineering geology. As a service consisting of professional advice and assistance in the field of geology and environmental protection, its scope may include:

  • Counteracting threats or solving problems that arise during the work
  • Advice on the selection of the method of securing excavation walls
  • Advice on the foundation method
  • Acceptance of soil in the excavation
  • Identification of the causes of cracks in buildings
  • Advice on excavation drainage
  • Advice on the depth and amount of unstable soil to be replaced or on its compaction
  • Determination of geological hazards in the area of the planned or completed investment
  • Advice on securing the building against groundwater
  • Determination of risks that may arise during construction and after the building is put into use.

Benefits of Geotechnical Consulting

The benefits of geotechnical and geological consulting are many and depend on the type and size of investment. The main benefits include:

  • Optimization of the construction project
  • Prevention of site hazards and disasters
  • Geotechnical and geological support
  • Optimization of the foundation method of a building taking into account the geological, hydrological and geotechnical conditions around the site
  • Monitoring and assessment of the subsoil during excavation, foundation and other works
  • Solving problems and osbtacles encountered on site such as unexpected geological phenomena, landslides or structural failures

We specialize in professional geotechnical consulting services

We have been providing geotechnical consultations since 1990. During this time, many clients and investors have benefited from our unique knowledge, experience and team of professionals. Our work is carried out under the supervision of Krzysztof Traczyński and Michał Grela, experts with many years of experience in the geotechnical industry. We have performed geotechnical consultations for the largest construction companies and hundreds of individual clients. Consultations were also used at many construction sites of the most important investments in Poland.

The process of geotechnical consulting

  • The client contacts us and presents his needs and expectations, which we analyze to present the offer of consulting services. Our offer includes the scope, methodology, schedule and cost of geological consultations.
  • We collect and analyze data on land and investments. We conduct a site inspection. We develop a geological consulting plan that defines the objectives, scope and methods of tests and measurements.
  • We carry out planned tests and measurements at the investment site, including laboratory work if necessary. We monitor and evaluate the quality and quantity of work performed, while providing advice and solving any problems or difficulties.
  • We prepare a report on the results of geological consultations, presenting conclusions and investment recommendations.

Examples

Consultation example no. 1.

In the planned location of the office building in Warsaw, there were two levels of moraine clay separated by a layer of fluviglacial sand. The upper level of clay contained numerous sand pockets that carried groundwater. At the foundation level which was set at a depth of 9.0 m below ground level, there was semi-compacted sandy loam. Due to the presence of sand and water, the excavation enclosure was planned to be constructed using the anchored diaphragm wall technology.

An investor came to us for assistance. After geotechnical consultations, we assessed water and soil conditions by making soil maps at various depths, from 1.0 meter to the foundation level - every meter. A three-dimensional image of the subsoil showed that the sand pockets were not connected and there was no risk of flooding the excavation with groundwater, which would require continuous water pumping.

With the help of geotechnical consultations and subsequent analyses, it was possible to make an excavation in the berliner wall enclosure. The change in technology resulted in savings of several hundred thousand Polish Zloty.

Consultation example no. 2.

At one of the construction sites in Warsaw, soil tests revealed that the area in the region of Szczęśliwice-Żoliborz was filled with soil of poor strength parameters. Under a layer of sand of just a few meters of depth, there was a complex of stangation soil consisting of gyttja, dust and silty loam in plastic and hard plastic states. These types of soil were located at a depth of twenty meters.

The client originally planned to place the foundation slab on piles. Geotest was asked to provide geotechnical advice. As a result of the consultations, it was decided that Geotest should also perform special soil strength tests and settlement calculations for the directly set foundation slab, i.e. without piles.

Samples were taken in the field for deformation tests which allowed to determine the value of deformation modulus for gyttja - the weakest in the subsoil. The settlement calculations showed that they will be lower than the allowable values.

As a result of our assistance, buildings from 3 to 8 storeys high were built directly without the use of piles. This solution saved over PLN 300,000 on foundation works.

Today, several years after the construction of the buildings, we can confidently say that the chosen solution was the right one.

Steps to perform geotechnical consulting

Geotechnical consulting is performed in four phases: contact and agreement, preparation, performance and reporting of consultation. It may include monitoring of the implementation of recommended actions.

Consultation result

You will receive a report that, depending on the contract, will include information on the ground condition and its impact on constructed facilities, as well as recommendations for optimizing the design and implementation of the investment. This report usually includes suggestions for further action or soil testing.

Reduce risk with geotechnical consulting

Geotechnical consulting means:

  • Professional advice and assistance on geological issues
  • Minimizing of the risk of unexpected problems on the site
  • Supervision of implementation of geological or geotechnical works
  • Optimization of the investment implementation process and as a result financial optimization
